How to Insert an APA Style Running Header, Other Header, and Page Numbers in a Word Document

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  • Go to the first page, and select Insert from the top menu and then Header.  
  • Choose the first header type.
  • Under Design, from the top menu, place a checkmark in the box for Different First Page.
  • Type in your header text.
  • At the end of your text, under the Design menu, choose Page Number and then select Current Position.
  • Move your cursor before the inserted page number and hit tab until it moves to the other side of the page.
  • Go to the second page, click in the header area and type in the text for the header for the rest of the document.
  • At the end of your text, under the Design menu, choose Page Number and then select Current Position.
  • Move your cursor before the inserted page number and hit tab until it moves to the other side of the page.
