As part of our Mission to provide resources that promote lifelong learning, the library offers a variety of tablets for two-week checkout. The devices are available first-come-first-served to all Fontbonne students, faculty, and staff in good standing. Current identification must be provided. Requests for specific units can be made through the Catalog or at the Circulation Desk; we will email your Fontbonne account when they become available.

Groups of devices also may be made available to faculty for classroom use. You can direct requests to Mark Glenshaw in Circulation: / 314-719-8088. Please provide at least two weeks’ notice and include any special requests.

Renewals & Returns

Renewals are not allowed at this time. Each tablet includes a USB cable, a power adapter, a cover, and a carrying case. For your protection, please return all pieces to the Circulation Desk in person to be checked in. There is a 24-hour turnaround time for all devices when they are returned.

Fines & Damages

You are wholly responsible for the device and its accessories while it is checked out to you. Units and/or accessories not returned within three (3) business days of the due date will be billed to your library account.

Personal Data & Information

Devices come pre-loaded with a variety of applications, many of which can be accessed with patrons’ personal accounts. Users are NOT able to delete, update, or download apps (including free ones) or to synchronize content with other machines. Any documents, images, or other files must be moved through a cloud service or via email. Because we value all patrons’ privacy, all photos, documents, browsing history, logins, and other data will be permanently deleted when devices are returned and restored to the default settings for the next user.

We are always glad to consider suggestions and requests for new content. Just ask your favorite librarian or email us:

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is the Jack C. Taylor Library at Fontbonne University lending tablets?
The primary purpose is to provide a way for Fontbonne students, faculty, and staff to interact with emerging book and information technologies.

How do I reserve a particular device?
To request a specific tablet, stop by the front desk or go to the library’s online catalog and do a keyword search for the device you’d like and request that item. We’ll send an email when your choice is available for pick-up at the circulation desk.

Can I check out an device without any content on it?
All tablets come pre-loaded with selected content. If you need a blank one, please check with library circulation staff and we’ll de-register and clear the device.

Can I request to download the library's eBooks on my personal device?
We cannot put our eBooks on your personal device(s) because of publisher licensing restrictions. Many titles, however, can be checked out through OverDrive.

What about my personal data (logins, passwords, photos, etc.)?
Part of our check-in procedure includes removing this kind of data by wiping each device and restoring it to its original state. Mistakes happen, however, so we recommend that you make an effort to delete anything you don't want to share before returning it to the desk. The Library cannot be responsible for anything left on its equipment.

Will the library consider acquiring more and/or other types of devices in the future?
Circulation statistics and ongoing costs will be monitored to determine how effective and useful circulation is and to determine if more tablets or other models should be tested by the library.

Does the library plan to replace print books with eBook titles?
No, we recognize that many people prefer print books to electronic titles. In addition, eBook formats are currently in flux, and our priority is to ensure that titles purchased will be available long-term. The library will still build its print collections in addition to purchasing high-demand titles for the eBook collections.
