Course Reserves Policies

Physical Course Reserves

Faculty are encouraged to place course-related items on reserve at the front desk that are in compliance with US Copyright Law (Title 17 U.S.C. Section 107).

Books, textbooks, and audio-visual materials can be placed on Reserve for either in-library, overnight, or 7-day checkout. Reserve materials will be removed at the end of each semester. Download and attach the Course Reserve Form to your items and send to the library or contact the Circulation Desk for information: 314-889-1417.*

We are happy to work with faculty to provide copies of part of a textbook once it has been placed on Reserve (usually one or two chapters, depending upon the length of the text). Please contact the front desk for details.

Articles can be formatted electronically and uploaded into your course shell (following appropriate copyright guidelines). Print copies will not be maintained at the Circulation Desk.

Please allow up to five business days for processing of all Reserve requests. Thank you!

Electronic Access to Articles

Electronic Reserves

Copyright law requires that permissions be obtained from the copyright holder for the dissemination of articles in a coursepack or through a course management system. Fair use exemptions must meet the appropriate conditions. More information about copyright and Fair Use is available in our Copyright guide. For details about course packs, contact the campus bookstore. Please contact the University Librarian if you have additional questions about copyright and fair use.

Persistent Links

To avoid copyright issues, you may be able to provide your students with a direct, unchanging (persistent) link to the article you want to use in your class. If we have access to the article thorough one of our library databases, you can put a Persistent Link to the article in Canvas that will take students directly to that article. This method does not require copyright permissions to be secured.

Each database works a little bit differently to create a permalink. Below are a few examples. If you have further questions about electronic resource reserves, please contact us!

EBSCO Databases

  • Once you have found the article you need, click on the Permalink icon located in the bottom of the toolbar on the right side of the screen.
  • Copy the permalink that appears at the top and paste it into Canvas. Include the citation in Canvas as well -- it will be helpful for students if that database is unavailable for some reason when they go to retrieve the article.

JSTOR

  • Once you have found your article, cut and paste the stable URL from the top of left hand corner of the article page.

How to Add a Kanopy Video to Canvas

Instructors can link to Kanopy videos and embed clips or entire films into a Canvas course using the sharing tools found underneath each Kanopy film.

Linking to or Embedding a Kanopy Video

Click the share button below any full-length video or playlist. This generates a permanent URL to the video(s) to use when sharing and HTML code to use to embed the video.

  1. To link to the video, copy and paste the link in the desired location in Canvas, e.g.: Modules > Add >  External URL
  2. To embed the video, select "embed" and copy the HTML code that appears in the box below the tab.
    1. Go to Canvas and into the module you wish to embed the video
    2. In the rich text editor, select the embed icon
    3. Paste the HTML code from the Kanopy video
